Documenting Heifer International's Solar Power Impact in the Diary Sector

Uganda's average electricity access rate is just 45%, significantly below the global average of 87%. This energy deficit critically impacts agricultural production and sustainability, particularly for dairy farmers striving to close their living income gap.

Infomercial Media was tasked by Heifer International to tell the story of their groundbreaking intervention and the collaborative efforts helping farmers bridge this gap. Equipped with drones for aerial footage, mini-gimbals for motion images, and high-quality still and video cameras, we set out to bring this transformative story to life.

We meticulously documented the significant challenges faced by farmers, including inadequate storage facilities and high operational costs. Many of the 197 milk collection centers supported by Heifer International relied on diesel engines, spending up to 40% of their operational costs on fuel and maintenance. Those connected to the national grid suffered from constant power outages, leading to dairy processors operating below capacity and struggling to meet demand.

At the Migina Milk Collection Center under Dwanilo Milk Cooperative, a 41.4 kWp solar PV system was installed. The results have been transformative, with a 100% Reduction in Milk Losses, which equates to 197,321 liters of milk, worth over $49,000, being chilled monthly, Energy Cost Savings and up to 4.9248 tonnes of CO2 saved each month.

Heifer International, in partnership with Carbon Trust, addresses these issues through the Solar for Sustainable Income in Dairy (SSID) project. This initiative aims to revolutionize dairy production by embracing solar power and efficient energy use.

The journey doesn’t end here. Seven additional solar-powered solutions are under installation across six dairy cooperatives in various districts.

Infomercial Media is privileged to be part of this project, capturing farmers’ testimonies and their prospects, and showcasing the transformative impact of Heifer International’s interventions.
